![]() By comparison The Last Guardian often feels a little aimless, with no real antagonist or sense of momentum. When originally released ICO was criticised for being too short, but really it’s the perfect length. To be fair it has a lot of work to do, attending to both you and Trico, but it fails so often the game’s peaceful atmosphere is constantly ruined by you cursing like a sailor as you try to see where you’re going. But the worst mechanical element in the game by far is the camera, which is one of the worst we’ve used in a long time. There are some clever puzzles as well though, mostly those revolving around using Trico’s huge size and weight, but considering there’s no real combat (Trico fights the statutes but all you can do is shove them off balance) these gameplay issues can’t be ignored. The other half the game makes painfully obvious, by constantly reminding you of the controls in giant screen prompts that won’t go away. The solution is always far simpler than it appears, and half the time all your complex theories are confounded when you realise all you had to do is climb on Trico’s back and tell him to jump.
